WH-PNP-F – Harley Radio Front RCA Kit Installation Manual

 Tools & Parts

  • Tools Required
    • Wire stripper/crimper
    • Electrical tape or heat shrink tubing
    • Digital multimeter
    • Torx drivers (for fairing removal if needed)
    • Zip ties (optional, for harness management)
  • Parts Supplied
    • WH-PNP-F harness kit — includes RCA adapters and speaker harness leads
WH-PNP-F harness kit showing RCA connectors and speaker wire leads.
  • Optional/Related Parts
    • WH-BYP-F amplifier bypass harness (required if bike is equipped with factory amplifier)

Note: Installation skill level = Intermediate. Time = approx. 45–60 minutes.

Installation Steps

  1. Locate the factory speaker connectors outside the fairing enclosures on both sides
    1. Street Glide: connectors are low and forward of enclosures.
    2. Road Glide: connectors are near the top, beside the radio.
  2. Disconnect each 2-pin Molex connector between the bike harness and the speaker
    enclosure.
Reason: Creates access point for the WH-PNP-F harness.
  3.  Connect the RCA adapter harness to the bike harness side you just disconnected.
    1. Black RCA = left (clutch) side.
    2. Red RCA = right (brake) side.
  4. Connect the 2-pin female leads (red/black wires) to each speaker enclosure.
Reason: Provides direct connections from the radio to the speakers.
  5. Strip the unterminated ends of the red/black wires. Connect to the front outputs
(channels 1 & 2) of your aftermarket amplifier.
    • Red = positive (+)
    • Black = negative (–)

Note: When facing the front of the motorcycle, left/right appear reversed. Always reference left/right from the rider’s seating position. Harley also marks left-side harnesses with orange tape rings.

Vehicle Fitment Guide

  • 2014–2013 Harley-Davidson: Street Glide, Road Glide, Electra Glide (including Ultra & CVO models).
  • Bikes with factory amplifiers also require the WH-BYP-F amplifier bypass harness for installation.

Verification & Testing

Radio Flash Explained

A radio flash is a software update to the factory Harley radio using the TechnoResearch tool. This tells the radio that factory equipment has been removed and aftermarket gear is installed. Flashing with the American Hard Bag profile adjusts several key settings:

  • Enables fader and rear audio outputs that are disabled in stock form.
  • Activates tone controls (bass/treble) even without a factory amplifier.
  • Optimizes the factory EQ curve for aftermarket amplifiers and speakers.
  • Reduces signal voltage to make it compatible with most amplifiers that accept
    speaker-level over RCA.
  • Preserves Harley’s dynamic equalization feature, which adjusts sound based on volume and road noise.

Why you need it: Without the flash, audio output may be distorted, controls may not function, and the radio may send incorrect signals that limit system performance.

Amplifier Compatibility Explained

The WH-PNP-F outputs a speaker-level signal over RCA connectors. Most motorcycle-rated amplifiers are designed to accept this directly. To confirm compatibility:

  • Check your amplifier’s manual for support of speaker-level input over RCA.
  • Use a digital multimeter to measure resistance between the outer rings of the RCA
inputs. A proper compatible amplifier will show resistance in the thousands of Ohms. If the reading is near zero Ohms, the RCA inputs are line-level only and not compatible.

If your amplifier is not compatible: This is not part of the normal installation. Only perform these steps if your amplifier does not support the more common speaker-level over RCA input.

Harness Modification Steps

  1. Cut off the RCA connectors from the WH-PNP-F harness
  2. Remove the load resistor section as shown.
  3. Identify each wire by color using the chart
  4. Connect each wire directly to your amplifier’s dedicated high-level input harness
    (pigtail). Extend wires if necessary.
  5. Secure all connections with crimp or solder and insulate with heat shrink tubing or tape.

Verification & Testing

  1. Power on the radio.
  2. Verify:
    • Both left and right speakers produce sound.
    •  Amplifier channels 1 & 2 are wired with correct polarity (red = +, black = –).
    • Volume increases smoothly without distortion.
  3. Confirm that the radio has been flashed with the TechnoResearch tool using the
    American Hard Bag profile.
Reason: Ensures EQ, tone controls, and fader operate correctly.

Note: Without flashing, tone controls and fader may not function, and audio quality may suffer.

Troubleshooting

Symptom
Likely Cause
 Fix
No sound Bike has a factory amplifier
still in circuit or a bypass
harness has not been used.
Install WH-BYP-F bypass harness to route
signal from radio to speakers.
Sound too boomy or harsh Radio not flashed / crossover not set Flash radio with American Hard Bag profile.
Enable high-pass filter at 130–150 Hz.
Weak bass,
hollow sound
Speaker polarity reversed Check amplifier or enclosure wiring. Remember Harley uses large terminal =
negative, small terminal = positive inside
speaker enclosures.
